Between gaming on a budget and always keeping one eye on my (ever-growing) backlog, 2023 is a year like any other: I play a few new games, a few big games from last year, and a whole bunch of indies.

2023 was a fantastic year for video games…and I say that as someone who skipped most of the heavy hitters this year. But, for now, it’s time to put on my retrospective cardigan and reflect on my favorite gaming experiences this year.

We’re about a month beyond the big, bombastic E3 week I look forward to every year…and I’m still not sure how I feel about the fact that E3 2022 was canceled. It’s been such a reliable part of my summer for so long that June just feels weird without it. But hey, I guess we might as well talk about my highlights from the “show.”

The 2021 Backlog Awards were easily the hardest so far. But since it's an annual tradition, I've done my best to trim things down to a top 10. And even in a year when I’ve played fewer video games, it’s still time to rank and discuss my favorites.

As we covered in part 1 of my Top 20 Games of All Time update, playing new games tends to shake up how we think about older games. But it will take something truly special to bust into my top 10. If Haven couldn’t do it, I doubt many other games have a shot…right?
